It took her breath away to hear it. She had seen the signs, the suspicious calls at night, him arriving later than usual from work, but despite knowing, it didn't hurt any less.
It had been a great 25 years. Not the best, but by far not the worst. 25 wonderful years came to a close. This was the end; this was it.
Yet, she caved. She gave in to what she knew would one day come, given all the signs she had seen. She knew he loved her, but never as completely as she loved him.
He asked her if she would go to the wedding. She agreed. What else could she do? After all, she still loved him.
As she sat in the church, she smiled as big as she could for him. Knowing that he had finally found his place, his soulmate, she smiled, and a single tear rolled down her cheek.
Then...
She turned to her husband and said, "our baby is grown". It broke her heart to know that he wouldn't be coming back 'home' like he used to, but she knew she had raised him well, and was proud of who he had become.
Mendelssohn's wedding march picked up. He walked by her and mother and son smiled at each other. They both knew that even though he was married that he would always be her "little boy". Just like he had said when he was only 4 years old.
--To all the sons out there, remember that the first heart you break will always be your Mother's. Honor her with everything you do and as today comes to a close, don't forget to give her a very happy Mother's day.
